Mano murthy interview to Chitraloka - Apr 09

Manomurthy Kannada music DirectorWhere is Manomurthy? That's one question that every music lover has naturally. Because after giving some memorable songs and being at the peak of the career, Manomurthy is nowhere to be seen nor none of the films he has composed music for has been released in the last few months. Chitraloka.com exclusive chats with the music director about his disappearance.

Inspite of giving so many hits, Manomurthy is nowhere to be seen in Kannada film industry these days. Why? Actually speaking, it's nothing like that. Four of my films are awaiting for release. Among that 'Januma Janumadallu' and 'Olave Jeevana Lekkachaara' was completed long back. I think the producers are scared of the recent box-office fate and is waiting for the right time to release. 'Male Barali Manju Irali' faced some financial crunch and now they have come out of it and getting the film ready for release. As for as 'Mansaare' is concerned I am half through with it. I haven't seen a release after 'Haage Summane'. But I have been doing the same thing all these time. These year all these four films will get released after which I will start accepting new projects. I have not gone anywhere and I will be here for sometime.

You had to struggle for more than 10 years to make a mark in the industry. Now that you are the most sought after music director, don't you think your absence will hamper your future prospects?

I don't think the listener have forgotten me. There is a big slowdown in the industry. The people have not only fortgotten me but a lot more others also. I have heard that the celebrity craze among the viewers have gone down to some extent. Even the producers are scared of releasing their movies or start new movies. They have the money, but I think they are waiting for the right opportunity.

There is a rumour that Manomurthy is too expensive. Is that the reason why you are not getting enough offers here?

Its completely baseless. Sometime back I heard a rumour that I am charging 65 lakhs per film. Forget 65 lakhs, I am not even charging half of it. It has never happened and it will never happen in the future. There is not an element of truth it. To be frank, the industry can't offer such a remuneration that too for just music. Only stars car charge such an amount and not people like us.

Manomurthy was always accused of repetations. What's your explanation about that?

I make concious effort not to repeat my music. Its nothing like repetations but its my signature music that sounds like repetation. Every creative person has his own signature. If we hear A R Rahman's music, we identify it because it has his signature. The same thing happens with my music also.

What happened to the music album you were supposed to do with Sonu Nigam and Jayanth Kaikini?

Yes, that project is almost complete and will be releasing by next month. Even the video for this album is also shot. Ashok Kheny has produced the album. Sonu Nigam has sung all the songs while Jayanth Kaikini has written the lyrics. The album is titled 'Neene Bari Neene'.

Many in the industry says you are not easily accessible?

Nothing like that. Though I don't go to the media myself, I reciprocate whenever they contact me. It is just a silly rumour that I am not available.

What do you think about the competition and music market here in Kannada?

Actually speaking, I don't know the music trend here. I am not following it at all. Once thing is for sure, and that is Melody is the king and nothing else. Sometimes there are some minor deviations, but as far as I know the people are always desperate for a melodious music.

There were rumours that you would be composing music to other language films also. Is it true? In case it is true which language are you working currently?

There are offers from Bollywood, but there is a tremendous slowdown everywhere. The inflow of the money has suddenly stopped. So, many of the projects are on the hold. I would like to formally announce when everything goes right.

What do you have for future?

Nothing actually, I will continue composing music for Kannada films as usual. But I don't want to be billed as a mass music director. I cannot composed music to seven to eight films every year. I am comfortable composing music for four, max five films a year. That too, I do my work sincerely. When they release is not my problem.
